Dawgs take 4th
Over the past week end the Glasgow Ice Dawg Bantams headed to Havre for their state hockey tournament. Making the trip were Ryan Padden, Tyler Mix, Dillon Pankratz, Harley Eliason, Luke Gunderson, Austin Svingen, Connor Simensen, Keil Krumwiede, Sam Schultz, Blake Mattfeldt, and Parker Kulczyk. The Dawgs knew they faced adversity as they would be playing with a very short bench. While they had 10 skaters and one goalie their opponents would be icing much larger teams with 15 or more players to draw from. After finishing the season 2-10 in league play and 5-13 overall the Dawgs were the number 4 seed and were scheduled to face the number 1 Flathead Flames in game 1 on Friday night. The Flames had gone undefeated in the regular season and were the obvious favorite going into the tournament.
The Flames scored early in the first period to take the lead, and Glasgow was only able to get 3 shots on the opposing goalie with none finding the back of the net. After being shut down by the Flames goalie and defense in the first, the Dawgs hit the ice firing on all cylinders in the second. Padden’s unassisted goal on a power play early in the period sparked the team as they found their offensive flair. Padden scored again eight minutes later with assists going to Schultz and Krumwiede. Schultz scored a power play goal in the second, but Flathead also scored to keep the game close. As the period drew to an end Krumwiede beat the Flames goalie to make it 4-2 going into the third. Flathead closed the gap, putting the pressure on the Dawgs, but Eliason was able to stop 18 shots allowing only one to hit the twine. Glasgow was out shot 45-21, but the game ended with a 4-3 victory for the Dawgs as they handed the Flames their first league loss of the season. Eliason made 42 saves in the win.
Game 2 saw Glasgow face off against their rivals from Havre. These teams have traded wins all season. Glasgow scored first as Krumwiede beat the Ice Hawk goalie with an assist going to Schultz. Five minutes later Padden scored unassisted on the power play. The Dawgs were not able to score in the second as they only got 4 shots on Havre’s net. Eliason made 21 saves in the second, but allowed one goal late in the period to make it a 2-1. One minute and one second into the third Padden beat the Hawks goalie after receiving a beautiful pass from Krumwiede. A short time later they reversed rolls as Krumwiede scored off of a pass form Padden. Despite 17 shots on net the Hawks were not able to score in the third and the game ended in a 4-1 victory for Glasgow. The Dawgs were out shot 50-16 and Eliason made 49 saves in the winning effort.
Heading into game three Glasgow was on a roll after having defeated 2 higher seeds in the tournament. Their next opponent would be the number 2 seeded Missoula Bruins. In the first, Schultz was able to score with an assist going to Krumwiede, but the Bruins scored 4 goals in the first to jump out to a commanding lead. The second period held more of the same as Missoula put 30 shots on the Glasgow net with only 2 beating the Dawg’s goal tender. Padden scored the lone Glasgow goal in the second with an assist going to Krumwiede. Missoula held a 6-2 lead by the end of the second. In the third period Glasgow was only able to generate 5 shots on the Bruin net but their goalie stopped them all. Missoula scored 2 more to defeat the Dawgs 8-2. Glasgow was again out shot 60-15, with Eliason making 52 saves in the loss.
Glasgow was now tied with Flathead and Missoula with 2 wins each. The tie braker to decide who would move on to the championship game was goals against during the tournament. Based on this Glasgow was to play the winless Havre Ice Hawks on their home ice to for 3rd place. In a very physical hard fought first period, both teams scored with Glasgow’s goal coming off of the stick of Padden with an assist going to Krumwiede. The second was more rough and tumble play with both teams scoring 3 in this back and forth affair. Padden scored his second of the game with an assist going to Simensen. Svingen and Krumwiede both scored unassisted to keep it knotted at 4 heading into the final period of the season. Havre scored a minute into the third to take a lead that they would not relinquish. Glasgow turned up the heat with a minute remaining pulling the goalie to get the extra attacker, but could not even it up to force overtime. The game ended in 5-4 loss for the Dawgs. The Dawgs were out shot 51 to 24 with Eliason stopping 46 in the loss. With the loss, the Glasgow Ice Dawg Bantams placed fourth in the Treasure State league 2009-2010 season.
